Panama is a country in Latin America that we can define as transcontinental, because the eponymous canal, which we can cross with our cruises, marks the border between North America and South America.
The Panama Canal is a very unique place where engineering won over nature to create an isthmus that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. A magnificent waterway that, by successively emptying and filling tanks, overcomes the large difference in height. To successfully cross, vessels must be subjected to a Panamax category. By 2016, with the expansion and streamlining of the locks after a consortium of European companies led by Italy, the category was changed to New Panamax. On our Costa Cruise ship we can enjoy the spectacle of the crossing during the trip to Panama.
