Description

We immerse ourselves in nature worthy of an oil painting to discover the history and mysteries of this enchanting region.

What we will see
  • The proud village of Seyðisfjörður
  • Vestdalur, a protected natural reserve that conceals a mystery
  • Vestdalseyri, a small town that has been deserted for half a century.

What we will do
  • We begin the tour with a pleasant walk to the village of Seyðisfjörður , nestling in enchanting landscape between waterfalls, mountains and the ocean: the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Icelandic nature. A curious feature of the village is that, when seen from the fjord, the houses appear to be posing for a sensational portrait. Skilfully designed, they also respect their disarmingly beautiful surroundings. Together with the plateau and the small waterfall that protect them from behind, they stand cheerfully at the edge of the fjord, providing colour even when the sun is scarce. Despite its small size, Seyðisfjörður boasts a lively cultural scene with an artistic centre and various museums.
  • Accompanied by our guide, we explore the valley of Vestdalur, a protected natural reserve with a rich collection of wild plant life. The valley features a lake and a cave where a few years ago, researchers found the bones of a woman and around 400 pearls now preserved in the National Museum of Iceland.
  • We then continue on to Vestdalseyri, a small town that was once home to a whaling station and one of the largest cooperatives in the country. Populated from 1851, despite its magnificent position and favourable climate it was abandoned by the last inhabitants in 1963 following a gradual decline.
  • During our walk we pass a series of splendid waterfalls simply begging to be photographed. Finally, we return to the coach and head back to the quay.
