Description

The megalithic Barumini is the most prestigious and suggestive city in Sardinia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here we can see Sardinia's iconic prehistoric buildings: the famous "nuraghi", emblematic structures of a mysterious and extraordinary land that, behind their grandeur, conceal fascinating enigmas of a distant past.

What we will see

Pianura del Campidano

Barumini: the nuraghi of Barumini

What we will do
  • We leave the port on the coach and head north along the state highway named after Carlo Felice, which encircles the Campidano, the largest plain in Sardinia and once considered the granary of the Roman Empire.

  • We continue on towards Barumini, where we will have chance to visit the enormous "Nuraghe" of Barumini (known locally as "Su Nuraxi"), the largest on the island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The name "nuraghe" derives from "nurra", meaning "heap" or "accumulation" but also "cavity". The construction is in fact an accumulation of large stones arranged to form a round tower, a sort of truncated cone with a hollow interior. The Barumini nuragic site is surely one of the most famous and important archaeological sites in Sardinia due to its complexity and state of conservation.

  • According to a recent estimate there are more than 7000 nuraghi in Sardinia. They played a key role the island's early history, as well as being the earliest examples of advanced construction techniques. Their shape and strategic position seem to support the most common theory that states that nuraghi had a military function.

  • At the end of the visit, we return to Cagliari and the ship.
