Description

An excursion around Akureyri - a territory abounding in myths and legends

What we will see
  • Godafoss, the "Waterfall of the Gods"
  • Fosshóll, spectacular views over the Godafoss from the Skjálfandafljót river
  • Akureyri, old and new town, Botanical Gardens

What we will do
  • After leaving the port of Akureyri, the cultural and trade centre of the north, we will move towards the amazing Godafoss, the "Waterfall of the Gods", named that way because pagan idols were thrown into its waters around the year 1000 after the Parliament (Althing) presided over by Thorgeir decided to adopt Christianity as a national religion.
  • We will stop in Fosshóll, on the east bank of the river Skjálfandafljót near this wonderful waterfall for half an hour. It seems that the Huldufolk, i.e. the hidden population (Elves) live in this area.
  • From Godafoss, we will go back to Akureyri, a picturesque and welcoming town nestling between the sea and the mountains. Crossing the oldest part of the town, we can admire the influence Denmark had when the island was under the rule of the Danish Crown and Akureyri was considered "the most Danish town of the entire kingdom".
  • Of course we will also visit the more modern part of the town. Finally we will also pay a visit to the Botanical Gardens, with over 6,000 types of flowers, trees and plants from all over the world and 400 local plants.
