SHANGHAI CITY TOUR
Sightseeing, Cultural, Lunch not included
After leaving the port you will drive to the Bund, Zhongshan Road is a wide avenue along the Huangpu River. The newly renovated promenade between the Wusong River and the Old Town is known as The Bund, the former Wall Street of the foreign powers. The name itself reflects those colonial days: Bund is an Anglo-Indian word meaning embankment or quai. On the west side of the Bund, people hurry along, darting in and out of office buildings, while the side that fronts on the river is used for strolling and recreation. In the evening, the esplanade that traces the water line is dotted with young couples walking hand in hand and whispering quietly to each other. Next stop, you will drive to Yuyuan Garden, the only fully restored classical Chinese garden in Shanghai. It was inaugurated during the Ming dynasty and covers a total area of 20,000 square metres. Although the Garden occupies less than five acres, it perfectly demonstrates the sophisticated art of combining several different elements to create a world in miniature. Pavilions are ingeniously juxtaposed with passages, small hills and carefully selected, strategically positioned rocks, lotus ponds, bridges, winding paths, trees and shrubs.Next you will visit the Shanghai Museum, which boasts a collection of 120,000 pieces of ancient Chinese art belonging to 21 different categories, including bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, painting and sculpture. The collections of bronzes, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy are the most distinctive. Finally you will board the coach to drive to the French Concession for a sightseeing tour. During the 1920s and '30s the French Concession was famous for its lawlessness and decadence. This spirit of anarchy also attracted political activists and one of the houses in the district was the venue for the First National Congress of the Communist Party. The foreign diplomatic quarter, top hotels, great shopping and international restaurants and bars are all housed in these art deco buildings of the area. The former residences of Sun Yat-sen, Soong Ching-ling and Zhou Enlai are also located in the French Concession. After the sightseeing tour you will return to the port.
